A faculty member from the Department of Biotechnology participates in a specialised scientific seminar on the dangers of smoking.

Dr. Maryam Dhari Kamel, a faculty member in the Department of Biotechnology, participated in a scientific seminar entitled “Recent Developments in Smoking-Related Issues and the Role of Nicotine in Cancer Progression”, organised by the College of Medical and Health Technologies at Uruk Private University.

This participation came on the occasion of the National No Smoking Day, aiming to raise awareness about the dangers of cigarette and electronic hookah smoking and their negative effects on society. During the seminar, emphasis was placed on the idea that quitting smoking for just one day can be a first step toward permanent cessation, which contributes to improving public health and reducing the harms of both active and passive smoking. The seminar featured a valuable lecture presented by Dr. Maryam Dhari and Dr. Zuhair Ibrahim Hassoun, Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at Uruk University. The lecture addressed the health and social risks of smoking, with a particular focus on the dangers of secondhand smoke, which is considered a major contributor to cancer development. It also highlighted the community’s role in encouraging individuals to quit smoking through continuous support and awareness campaigns. This event is part of the ongoing efforts by the College of Medical and Health Technologies at Uruk Private University, in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology at the College of Applied Sciences, to promote a smoke-free culture and foster healthy behaviours, contributing to the development of a more health-conscious and smoke-free society.
